Why Slate Auto Opted for NMC Batteries Over LFP in Its Affordable EV Truck

Originally published by InsideEVs on May 2025

Slate Auto, the EV startup behind the highly anticipated minimalist electric truck, has taken a different path from many of its industry peers. Instead of using lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries—which are typically cheaper and widely used in budget-friendly EVs—Slate is opting for nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) chemistry in its production model.

Why the switch? According to CEO Chris Barman, the decision was driven by federal policy. LFP battery materials are primarily sourced from China, which poses a challenge for vehicles looking to qualify for the full $7,500 federal EV tax credit under the Inflation Reduction Act. NMC batteries, on the other hand, are easier to source domestically or from countries with U.S. free trade agreements.

Barman told InsideEVs that the goal is to keep the Slate Truck affordable for everyday Americans without sacrificing access to incentives that make the vehicle financially viable. She emphasized that the company is committed to simplicity and cost-efficiency, but also understands the importance of designing around the current regulatory environment.

By choosing NMC chemistry, Slate secures a more reliable supply chain while meeting government requirements—making it possible to deliver a sub-$20K electric pickup after incentives.
