That&#8217;s a big deal considering how the average price of an EV is $59,205 according to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kbb.com\/car-advice\/how-much-electric-car-cost\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.kbb.com\/car-advice\/how-much-electric-car-cost\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\">Kelly Blue Book<\/a>.<\/p>\n<aside data-block-type=\"embed\" data-render-type=\"fte\" data-skip=\"dealsy\" data-widget-type=\"seasonal\" class=\"hawk-base\"><\/aside>\n<p>We did a round up of the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tomsguide.com\/news\/the-8-cheapest-electric-cars-you-can-buy-right-now\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.tomsguide.com\/news\/the-8-cheapest-electric-cars-you-can-buy-right-now\">cheapest electric vehicles<\/a> you can buy right now and the Slate Truck&#8217;s price is still $8,000 less than the closest competitor, the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tomsguide.com\/reviews\/2022-nissan-leaf\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.tomsguide.com\/reviews\/2022-nissan-leaf\">Nissan Leaf,<\/a> which starts at around $28,140. Even for a gas car that&#8217;s a great value, plus the tax credit eligibility (which may or may not be going away under Trump). Notably, the Leaf has a similar 149 mile range as the Slate Truck.<\/p>\n<aside data-component-name=\"Recirculation:ArticleRiver\" data-nosnippet=\"\">\n<span class=\"bg-secondary-500 text-white text-lg font-bold uppercase py-1 px-2 leading-[1.625rem] sm:leading-[6px] sm:text-sm\"><br \/>\nYou may like<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThe definition of what\u2019s affordable is broken,\u201d Slate CEO Christine Barman said in a press release. \u201cSlate exists to put the power back in the hands of customers who have been ignored by the auto industry. Slate is a radical truck platform so customizable that it can transform from a 2-seat pickup to a 5-seat SUV.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Slate is a surprising entry in the automotive world that is reportedly backed by <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tomsguide.com\/tag\/amazon\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.tomsguide.com\/tag\/amazon\">Amazon<\/a> founder Jeff Bezos. However, those colors will be body wraps instead of paint, as the company is building the truck in a single configuration at its factory.<\/p>\n<p>The size of the vehicle is more reminiscent of European work trucks and vans than the monstrous trucks you see in America. Still, it&#8217;s made in America with Slate claiming that the truck is &#8220;engineered in Michigan and assembled in the Midwest.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The 150 mile range is thanks to a 57.2 kWh battery pack with rear-wheel drive, but a larger 84.3 kWh with a target range of 240 miles (386 km) will also be available.<\/p>\n<p>The charging port is NACS based (what <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tomsguide.com\/tag\/tesla\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.tomsguide.com\/tag\/tesla\">Tesla<\/a> uses for its chargers and has become something of a standard since 2022), which gives it wider access to charging stations across the county.<\/p>\n<p>For those who want a screen, you can use your phone plugged into a USB outlet or a dedicated tablet.<\/p>\n<p>For safety, the company is aiming for a 5-star crash rating and will feature active emergency breaking, forward collision warning, and up to eight airbags.<\/p>\n<p>A Slate Track will cost you around $27,500 before tax, title and fees, still less than the Leaf. Though the mythical $20,000 seems predicated on electric vehicle tax credits staying in place. For now, they exist but President Trump has indicated he wants to get rid of the incentives.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Whether or not the incentive goes away, our truck will be a high-value, desirable vehicle,&#8221; a spokesperson for Slate Auto told <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/cars\/2025\/04\/amazon-backed-startup-wants-to-sell-a-bare-bones-ev-truck-for-20000\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/cars\/2025\/04\/amazon-backed-startup-wants-to-sell-a-bare-bones-ev-truck-for-20000\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\">Ars Technica<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some potential specs for the Slate Truck.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Motor:<\/strong>\u00a0Single motor, RWD<\/li>\n<li><strong>Top speed:\u00a0<\/strong>90 miles per hour<\/li>\n<li><strong>Miles per gallon:<\/strong>\u00a096 mpg<\/li>\n<li><strong>Range:\u00a0<\/strong>150-240 miles<\/li>\n<li><strong>Battery pack:<\/strong>\u00a052.7-kWh battery pack, 150 kW<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fast charging:<\/strong>\u00a0Fast-charge to 80% at 120-kW in under 30 minutes<\/li>\n<li><strong>Size:<\/strong>\u00a0174.6 inches length, 108.9 inches wheelbase, 70.6 inches width, 69.3 inches height<\/li>\n<li><strong>Interior volume:<\/strong>\u00a055 cubic feet<\/li>\n<li><strong>Weight<\/strong>: Curb weight 3,602 pounds<\/li>\n<li><strong>Max payload:<\/strong>\u00a01,433 pounds<\/li>\n<li><strong>Max towing:<\/strong>\u00a01,000 pounds<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"outlook-3\">Outlook<\/h2>\n<p>The dream of an affordable, sub-$25,000 has been floated for years. However, with Tesla reportedly delaying production on the long-rumored Model Y, Slate appears ready to step in. Especially as more <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/used-teslas-flood-market-2025\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/used-teslas-flood-market-2025\" data-hl-processed=\"none\">drivers are ditching Teslas<\/a> due to recent actions by CEO <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tomsguide.com\/tag\/elon-musk\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.tomsguide.com\/tag\/elon-musk\">Elon Musk<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We might not be able to actually test it out until 2026, with first models possibly shipping in late 2026, according to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.caranddriver.com\/news\/a64564869\/2027-slate-truck-revealed\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.caranddriver.com\/news\/a64564869\/2027-slate-truck-revealed\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\">Car and Driver.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, the truck does need to overcome safety hurdles (it doesn&#8217;t have that 5-star rating yet), and potentially tariffs for materials. Also, it does seem that the $20,000 price is predicated on tax relief.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re interested, you can pay $50 to reserve early access to the truck at the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.slate.auto\/en\/reserve\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.slate.auto\/en\/reserve\" data-hl-processed=\"none\">Slate website<\/a>.
